Donegal people are being invited to view next week’s solar eclipse through professional equipment which will not harm their eyesight.A solar eclipseThe country is to be temporarily plunged into darkness on Friday the 20th by a near-total solar eclipse.Over 90% of the sun will be obscured during the astronomical event. The total phase of the eclipse, where the moon blocks the entire disc of the sun, will only be viewable in Svalbard, Norway and the Faroe Islands, but the partial eclipse will affect the rest of Europe, northern and eastern Asia and northern and western Africa. And it is due to begin at around 8.24am Irish time that morning and the totality, or maximum point of the eclipse, will hit at around 9.29am.It will look as if the moon has taken a bite out of the sun as the lunar body will cast its penumbra, or light outer shadow, on Earth. The event should then end around 10.37am.Seeing the eclipse with the naked eye or even with binoculars, telescopes or other viewing aids can cause retinal burn and could lead to blindness. The safest way to view it is with a pinhole projector The Donegal branch of Astronomy Ireland will have special telescopes to view the eclipse at the front door of the Letterkenny Institute of Technology.
