first_imgLATE RUNNING DESERT STONE RALLIES TO WIN GRADE II, $200,000 SAN GABRIEL STAKES BY A NECK UNDER FRANCO; TRAINED BY BALTAS, IRISH-BRED 5-YEAR-OLD GETS 1 1/8 MILES ON TURF IN 1:47.63ARCADIA, Calif. (Jan. 4, 2020)–Idle since May 27, Irish-bred Desert Stone rallied from last to win Saturday’s Grade II, $200,000 San Gabriel Stakes by a neck under Geovanni Franco. Trained by Richard Baltas, Desert Stone, a 5-year-old full horse, got a mile and one eighth on turf in 1:47.63.Breaking from the rail, Desert Stone ducked inward leaving the gate, but was quickly into stride and saved ground behind a well-bunched field that was headed by Overdue, who folded around the far turn. Desert Stone appeared full of run under a long hold turning for home and with Franco biding his time, angled out four-wide an eighth of a mile out and outran favored Cleopatra’s Strike for the money late.“I could see everyone bunching up and I knew the pace was pretty slow, but my horse was just waiting for me to turn him loose, so I didn’t worry about it,” said Franco, who won last year’s San Gabriel with Next Shares, who was also trained by Baltas. “We expected him to run good today and I was very happy with the way he ran from off the pace.  I’ve worked him a lot and he likes me and I like him.”Most recently ninth in the Grade I Shoemaker Mile on May 27, Desert Stone, who registered his first stakes win today, was off at 7-1 in a field of seven older horses and paid $16.20, $5.60 and $4.00.“This is kind of a different horse,” said Baltas.  “You can’t force this horse, he has a mind of his own. When he wants to run, he’ll run and Geovanni lets him do his thing in the beginning. He told me today, ‘If I can get him out, we’re gonna be tough.’  He had been blocked several times in the stretch before.”Owned by Zayat Stables, LLC, Desert Stone picked up $120,000 for the win, increasing his earnings to $332,662.  He now has three wins from 16 career starts.Fifth early, but close to the pace, Cleopatra’s Strike rallied three-wide turning for home, made the lead between horses, but couldn’t go with the winner late, finishing 1 ½ lengths in front of Majestic Eagle.  Off as the 6-5 favorite with Abel Cedillo, Cleopatra’s Strike paid $3.00 and $2.40.Majestic Eagle, who sat a close second to Overdue early, took the lead leaving the quarter pole and proved third best on the day, finishing a half length in front Chosen Vessel. Off at 5-1 with Rafael Bejarano, Majestic Eagle paid $3.20 to show.Fractions on the race were 24.26, 48.18, 1:11.65 and 1:35.98.Racing resumes at Santa Anita with an eight-race program on Sunday.  First post time is at 12:30 p.m. and admission gates open at 10:30 a.m.last_img read more

9 Reasons Glycolic Acid Is the Miracle Your Skin Has Been Waiting For

first_imgThis gentle exfoliator is the holy grail of complexion perfectors. What is glycolic acid?“Glycolic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid derived from sugar cane,” notes Dhaval G. Bhanusali, MD, board-certified dermatologist. What separates it from the likes of lactic and salicylic acids is its small molecular size that allows it to penetrate deeper into the skin to target your complexion concerns—whether it’s congested pores, blemishes, fine lines, uneven tone, or rough texture—and deliver more noticeable results.Glycolic acid makes skin glowA variety of factors, such as aging and dryness, can slow down skin’s natural shedding process leading to a dull, lackluster complexion. Glycolic acid-based exfoliants slough off dead skin cells, but not in the way you might expect. Unlike harsh scrubs, they work by gently dissolving the “glue” that makes old skin cells stick to the epidermis, revealing radiant, glowing skin. Reap the rewards of everyday exfoliation with a gentle cleanser, such as Glytone Mild Gel Cleanser or BeautyRx Balancing Glycolic Cleanser.Glycolic acid refines poresGlycolic acid helps to unclog, refine, and diminish the appearance of enlarged pores by dissolving makeup, dirt, oil, and excess sebum. “After nightly cleansing, saturate a cotton pad with Mario Badescu Glycolic Acid Toner or SkinMedica Rejuvenative Toner. Get your fix on the go with a pre-soaked pad. “Peter Thomas Roth Max Complexion Correction Pads has both glycolic and salicylic acids,” says board-certified dermatologist Debra Jaliman, MD. “Bliss That’s Incredi-‘Peel’! Glycolic Resurfacing Pads are individually wrapped, so they’re easy to throw in your gym bag for after a workout.”Glycolic acid fades discolorationDreaming of a more even-looking complexion? “Since glycolic acid sloughs off the top layer of the skin, it can help fade and even pigmentation, brown spots, and melasma,” explains Dr. Jaliman. Slather on a serum, like Drunk Elephant T.L.C. Framboos Glycolic Night Serum, which contains a cocktail of AHAs (glycolic, lactic, tartaric, citric, and salicylic), or Naturopathica AHA Refining Night Serum, and let it work its magic overnight.Glycolic acid improves textureSay goodbye to roughness. Glycolic acid is a skin-smoothing miracle worker. This chemical exfoliant revs up cellular turnover to resurface and retexturize skin, leaving it noticeably softer and smoother.Glycolic acid treats acneGlycolic acid is one of the ingredients should be part of your zit-zapping arsenal. Not only does it penetrate deep into the skin to address cystic and regular breakouts, but it helps increase cell turnover, accelerates healing, and fades acne scars. For all-over blemish control try SkinCeuticals Blemish and Age Defense. To eliminate monster bumps, Dr. Jaliman suggests reaching for Murad Acne Control Spot Treatment. A wash like Glytone Exfoliating Body Wash or Donell AHA 20 Body Tingle can help eradicate body breakouts.Glycolic acid combats the signs of agingWant to turn back the clock on your complexion? There’s a reason glycolic acid is used in chemical peels and so many anti-aging topicals. Most notably, it stimulates the production of collagen and elastin, the keys to firm, youthful skin. Dr. Bhanusali suggests using in an at-home glycolic acid peel, like Dennis Gross Skincare Alpha Beta Medi–Spa Peel, to improve tone, renew skin, and fight fine lines on a weekly basis. Keep in mind that these retinol-like results come with similar side effects, including increased photosensitivity, so it’s imperative to wear sunscreen every day.Glycolic acid helps keratosis pilaris“It’s also excellent for keratosis pilaris, often referred to as chicken skin, those pesky, itchy bumps found on the backs of arms,” says Dr. Jaliman. Instead of using an abrasive scrub, try applying a glycolic acid lotion, such as Alpha Skincare Revitalizing Body Lotion or Neostrata High Potency Cream, before bedtime. This will help unclog pores and dissolve dry skin sans irritation.Glycolic acid prevents ingrown hairsIngrown hairs—those unsightly red bumps that pop up in the armpit area and bikini zone—occur when a strand curls back down into the skin instead of growing out. While it is possible to tackle ingrown hairs at home, poking and prodding with a tweezer is not a solution. The best way to banish bumps is to prevent them in the first place. And for that, glycolic acid is a total game-changer, exfoliating away dead skin cells and thwart the formation of future ingrowns. Completely Bare Bikini Bump Blaster Pads and Bliss Ingrown Eliminating Pads are also infused with witch hazel to soothe redness and inflammation.Glycolic acid can be used by everyoneOne of the best things about glycolic acid—other than its myriad benefits—is that everyone can use it, regardless of age, skin type (even sensitive complexions), and tone. Plus, it’s safe to use during pregnancy and while breastfeeding.Sourcelast_img read more
