However, these motorists should slow down and watch for students loading or unloading from the bus.Be alert and watch for children especially near schools, bus stops, school buses and in school parking lots.Pay extra attention to lower speed limits in school zones.Watch for and obey signals from school crossing guards.Only drive or park in authorized areas to drop off or pick up children at school. The following diagram outlines Florida laws for stopping for a school bus. Each illegal pass-by could result in a tragic injury or fatality of a student. The inconvenience of an extra few seconds spent waiting for a stopped school bus is insignificant compared to the loss of a child’s life. Please enter your comment! Ask them what they are most comfortable with, or look for the signs in their response or lack of it, and deliver it,” he says.Although Pidgeon has a good understanding that the Internet is an important medium but does not eclipse other media, most of the other interviewees in the survey did not mention Internet fundraising as a strategy of the future. Only Tony Elischer mentioned it, seeing it as “the inevitable answer.” He said: “the rapid growth of the Internet and e-commerce in the last twelve months will open up a whole new field of opportunities and challenges for charities.” Advertisementcenter_img About Howard Lake Howard Lake is a digital fundraising entrepreneur. Political crisis in South Korea

first_img300,000 rallying in Seoul on Dec. 17.A major political crisis is shaking south Korea, but you would barely know it if you depend on the corporate media for your news. The president, Park Geun-hye, was impeached by an overwhelming majority of the south Korean legislature on Dec. 9. The vote came after two months of demonstrations calling for her resignation, with an estimated 2.1 million people turning out the Saturday before the vote. Since the impeachment of Park, the demonstrations have continued, with a reported 300,000 rallying in Seoul alone on Dec. 17.The president and her right-wing backers are contesting the impeachment. The forces behind her — including some of the biggest corporations in south Korea — are dragging out the process with appeals that could take a year and a half. The U.S. government has not publicly acknowledged the impeachment. The U.S. media, taking their cue from the billionaire ruling class here, are saying very little about it, but the strategists for imperialism are deeply concerned.U.S. military occupation of south KoreaThe U.S. military has occupied south Korea since the end of World War II. Since the Korean Revolution, which began during Japanese colonial rule and liberated the north in 1945, followed by the victory of the Chinese Revolution in 1949, the imperialists have focused on militarizing south Korea. They installed a string of dictators, including Gen. Park Chung-hee, father of the now-impeached president, who led a military coup in 1961 and ruled with an iron hand until 1979.Gen. Park showed his allegiance to the Pentagon by sending 300,000 Korean soldiers to fight in Vietnam in the 1960s. He became so hated that he was assassinated by the Korean Central Intelligence Agency, to be replaced by another general, Chun Doo-hwan.With such a deep military investment in south Korea, one can be sure that the current turmoil there is of great concern to the Pentagon and Wall Street. Indeed, one of the few newspapers to devote any space to the impeachment is the Wall Street Journal, whose headline on a Dec. 9 article read: “South Korea Impeachment of President Park Is Latest Hit to Global Political Order; Likely successors to President Park take different views on ties with Washington, free trade and big business.”The article says that the impeachment “brings the prospect of a new government for one of the U.S.’s closest allies that could have a skeptical stance toward Washington, a softer line on Pyongyang and a friendlier approach to China.”So the leading newspaper for the U.S. ruling class is warning its well-heeled readers that their domination over south Korea is being challenged by this immensely popular political movement. The immediate reasons for the impeachment center on corruption on a grand scale. Park and a friend, Choi Soon-sil, control foundations that received big donations from corporate heads who were pardoned by the president while facing jail for economic crimes.According to the Dec. 5 Wall Street Journal, “Park has pardoned top executives convicted of crimes, for example, Chung Mong-koo, chair of Hyundai Motor Group, sentenced to three years for embezzlement, pardoned without serving any time. One of the foundations allegedly controlled by Choi was funded by 15 of South Korea’s largest conglomerates. The chairmen of Samsung, SK, Hanwha, Hyundai Motor and CJ groups have all been pardoned in the past decade.”Attacks on working classThis scandal comes on top of huge attacks on the working class and other policies extremely offensive to the Korean people.During a more liberal period starting in the 1990s, workers in south Korea had the world’s highest rate of unionization. Today, after years of anti-labor measures and physical attacks on the union movement, along with the implementation of part-time and precarious labor, only one-tenth of the workforce is organized. In 2014, thousands of workers struck for three weeks in the longest strike in the history of Korail, the national railroad operator. The strike was provoked by a government restructuring plan that threatened privatization of the railroads, with loss of jobs, benefits and services. It quickly developed into one of the sharpest recent worker-government conflicts and was supported by the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions.Korail fired more than 4,000 workers on Dec. 9, 2014, and announced a plan to hire 660 strikebreakers. President Park ordered an attack by hundreds of police on the rail union’s headquarters and arrested 10 union leaders on Dec. 16.On July 4 of this year, Han Sang-gyun, president of the KCTU, was sentenced to five years in jail for leading protests against Park’s repressive labor policies.Park banned opposition partyAt the same time as the 2014 railroad strike, the Park regime banned the only real opposition party, the United Progressive Party, arresting some of its leading members and ejecting its five elected deputies from the national legislature. The party was reported to have around 100,000 members and supported the reunification of the divided Korean nation.Like her father, Park used the National Security Law to suppress freedom of speech and send to jail those demonstrating for reunification and against U.S. occupation and repressive government policies. This July, the Park regime announced it would let the Pentagon deploy a Terminal High Altitude Area Defense battery in the country’s southeast, aimed at both China and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea in the north. Farmers at the proposed THAAD site have continued protests every night since then. Also unpopular is the Park government’s push to sign a military intelligence pact with Japan, the country’s former colonial ruler, again at the instigation of the U.S., which has invited Japan into its military “exercises,” aimed in recent years at the DPRK.The U.S. government is acting low-key about the current turmoil in south Korea, but there can be no question that it is working feverishly behind the scenes trying to shore up both the military and the ruling class there against the popular masses.FacebookTwitterWhatsAppEmailPrintMoreShare thisFacebookTwitterWhatsAppEmailPrintMoreShare thislast_img read more

Midwest meeting exposes U.S. imperialism

first_imgFrom left: Randi Nord, Kousay Ahmad, Joe Mshahwar, Edmund Nabua and AdjoaAchiaa,May 19.An enthusiastic audience attended a May 19 forum in Chicago on combating the U.S. war drive from the Middle East to the Philippines.Randi Nord, a Workers World Party member from Detroit and journalist with Geopolitics Alert, spoke on Yemen. She characterized the horrific war in Yemen as an effort by the United States and its proxy, Saudi Arabia, to suppress a broad-based popular movement struggling for sovereignty and democracy.Kousay Ahmad, a representative of the Syrian American Will Association, described the widespread support for the democratically elected government of Bashar al-Assad in Syria and how the Syrian army and its Russian supporters are protecting civilians from terrorist carnage.Joe Mshahwar, a young Syrian-American activist with the Michigan Emergency Committee Against War and Injustice and WWP in Detroit, explained the historical background and genesis of the war in Syria and why the U.S. has unleashed terrorist groups to destroy the most democratic and secular state in the region.Edmund Nabua, from Anakbayan Chicago, linked these struggles in the Middle East to the struggle for national liberation and democracy in the Philippines, and stressed that the vast resources used to wage U.S. wars abroad are taken from education, health care and housing here at home. The forum, co-sponsored by Workers World Party and Anakbayan Chicago, was chaired by Adjoa Achiaa of Chicago WWP, who noted that May 19th — the birthday of heroic liberation fighters Ho Chi Minh, Malcolm X and Yuri Kochiyama — is a particularly suitable date to mobilize support for the global struggle against imperialism and all forms of oppression.FacebookTwitterWhatsAppEmailPrintMoreShare thisFacebookTwitterWhatsAppEmailPrintMoreShare thislast_img read more

She was accosted by three men of whom the youngest, who was unknown to her, tripped her up and then beat and insulted her. The other two who intervened only afterwards told her, “don’t pay attention to the actions of this young delinquent”.Suffering from bruising, the journalist had her injuries examined by a doctor the following day and asked her lawyer to officially complain about the incident.Bensedrine was summoned by the police on 8 January to be confronted by a simple-minded local man whom she had known for a long time and on whom, according to her husband, they were trying to pin the blame for the attack.Bensedrine herself was adamant, “The political police are behind this assault.””This kind of intimidation is unacceptable as is the response of the Tunisian authorities when they blandly say there are no political police in Tunisia!” said Robert Ménard, secretary general of Reporters Without Borders. “It is not April Fool’s Day.”He said that if Bensedrine had not yet made a complaint it was only because a lawyers’ collective was organising itself to prepare her statement of evidence for the prosecutor’s office. But in addition to rebuilding what was damaged or destroyed, the affected communities must also look to the future and prepare for future storms. FEMA is helping with that problem, to the tune of $1 billion in funds earmarked for hazard mitigation.During a press conference in Rockport, Texas, Gov. Greg Abbott announced that coastal communities affected by Hurricane Harvey could now apply for a share of half a billion dollars in FEMA funds that have been disbursed to the state. That’s half of the billion-dollar total, the rest of which is expected to be available by around the one-year anniversary of Harvey’s landfall in late August. As reported by Houston Public Media, the funds can be put toward a variety of hazard mitigation projects.“We want to rebuild in ways that reduce the risk of future damages to property and to lives,” Gov. Abbott told an assembly of reporters in Rockport. “The money is here, checks can be cut immediately as soon as you get your applications in and get them approved by [the Texas Division of Emergency Management].”The FEMA funds will cover 75 percent of costs for applicable projects, which Houston Public Media reports can include:Buyouts of flooded structures and elevating structures above floodplainsFloodwalls, seawalls, jetties, sand dune restoration and channeling waterwaysRetrofitting houses and buildings to withstand hurricane windsStorm surge protection projectsThe remaining 25 percent would typically be paid by local governments, Abbott told reporters that in this case other federal funds had been secured to cover the remainder of the cost for these Harvey-related projects.Austin-based FEMA spokesman Kurt Pickering said, “The whole idea is to make the state … more resilient next time.”Abbott clarified that these FEMA funds are in addition to the $5 billion HUD grant announced in November 2017. In accordance with HUD rules, Abbott said the Texas General Land Office must submit a state plan for those funds, which HUD must then approve. Abbott said he expected the $5 billion to be fast-tracked and available by the end of March. In the meantime, Texans still working to rebuild after Harvey can check out two upcoming free drop-in hurricane assistance centers, co-hosted by HOPE NOW Alliance and the National Mortgage Servicing Association. The drop-in center events will allow hurricane-affected residents to speak with professionals to learn how best to manage their own recovery and what resources are available to them. The first two events are scheduled for Tuesday, February 27, from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Kingwood Community Center located in Kingwood, Texas, and Wednesday, February 28, from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Courtyard Marriott in Katy, Texas.
