Mayor Carlos Gimenez Advocates of undocumented immigrants turned out in force on Friday as Miami-Dade County Commissioners listened to the public bashing Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez’ controversial immigration order directing county jails to comply with a new White House policy targeting sanctuary cities and jurisdictions. The commission heard from Florida state Senator Jose Javier Rodriguez and a long procession of speakers from various groups, including the American Civil Liberties Union and even the young children of parents who have been deported.“There’s no specific threat from the federal government. I would characterize this simply as appeasement of an administration that’s not only a month old,” Rodriguez said. All of Friday’s speakers were given one minute to make their case under rules outlined by Chairman Esteban L. Bovo, Jr. Many of the speakers wore white flowers as a show of support for undocumented people living and working in Miami-Dade County.“Right now I’m a fugitive and based on the law I’m a criminal,” acknowledged one man. “I’m not a criminal and I don’t think I should be treated as a criminal.”The Gimenez order came one day after President Donald Trump signed an executive order threatening federal funding to cities that didn’t comply. Gimenez has defended his stance.
Tourism officials in St. Kitts Nevis says the focus of this year’s Restaurant Week in the federation is that of Domestic Tourism.According to the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism, Carlene Henry Morton the country’s tourism product is not restricted to foreign clientele. Locals should get involved and enjoy their own products in order to promote not only the island but its restaurants.Local ambassadors“We are supposed to be our own best ambassadors and you cannot encourage people to enjoy or participate in something that you yourself do not know anything about,” Morton Henry said. “Once you have eaten at a particular establishment, you can say to our visitors, when you go to X place, you are going to have a wonderful experience. The food is very well prepared, nicely presented and the ambiance was great.”She noted hardworking individuals should think of restaurant week as a way of rewarding themselves while enjoying and learning about local cuisine.“Look at the menu, you know restaurant week is coming up, put aside your little five dollars and give yourself a US $60 meal every now and again,” she said. “For example, my grandmother’s birthday is coming up. So, all of us are going to pool our monies and go to X or Y place. It could also be an anniversary.”Milestones are being achieved around Restaurant Week, said Henry Morton, adding that the week can be a way to celebrate them.Prices loweredPrices have been lowered because it’s the slow season, she said while adding that the prices will increase when the tourist season kicks in in October. “I am encouraging everybody out there to find a spot with a price point where you can treat yourself and your family. You go out together and you enjoy. This isn’t something that you do every day; this may be once or twice in the year and you are taking advantage of the fact that it is Restaurant Week,” she said.
Some East Coast residents woke up Wednesday morning to find snowflakes on their palm trees. Tallahassee residents reported seeing snow for the first time in 28 years thanks to a brutal winter storm that’s strengthened into a crippling “bomb cyclone” affecting the entire coast up to Maine.A bomb cyclone, also labeled a “winter hurricane,” are formed when a cold air mass collides with a warm air mass and the pressure drops rapidly, creating extremely high winds and heavy snow in a short period of time.Brief, but exciting weather eventBut no need for panic; the snow in Tallahassee only lasted a few minutes and barely measured a tenth of an inch before the sunshine returned. Florida once again seemed to have experienced a near-miss. The United States have defended the decision to collect social media identities from nearly everyone who is seeking entry into the US, but cited Caribbean people should not fear the new rule.“Social media wasn’t so prevalent back when these documents were created…so now the government wants to update and include additional information to be with the times,” said Jeremiah Knight, Counsellor for Public Affairs at the US Embassy in Jamaica, adding that the aim is to have the visa forms align with technological advances. To list all social media used in past 5 yearsThe proposal, if approved by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), would require most immigrant and non-immigrant visa applicants to list all social media identities they have used in the past five years. It will be used to vet and identify them and could affect an estimated 15 million people yearly.Extreme vettingImmigration officials said the proposals support President Donald Trump’s promise to institute “extreme vetting” of foreigners entering the United States to prevent terrorism.US citizens will have 60 days from March 30 to comment on the proposal. Knight said following the 60 days period, the comments or recommendations will be submitted to OMB for any issues to be addressed with another 30 days being allocated to deal with those issues.Washington also increasing security checksKnight, speaking on a television program, said Washington is also increasing its security checks. “Some people on social media fill it with particular organizations that might be of some concern, or their comments raise awareness to government entities, so they want to just do some balances before people (apply) for immigrant and non-immigrant visas.”He said the processing time of visa applications will not be affected due to the increased information required and urged applicants to “be honest and complete” with the document.Previously, under rules instituted last May, consular officials were instructed to collect social media identifiers only when they determined that such information is required to confirm identity or conduct more rigorous national security vetting. The American Civil Liberties Union expressed concern, saying the move would have a “chilling” effect on freedom of speech and association.
Mr. Atkins is survived by his wife Shirley, three sons, Patrick, Peter, Sean, and daughters-in-law, several grandchildren and other extended family members. Mr. Atkins served as Jamaica’s Consul General for the Southern USA, for eight years before his retirement from the diplomatic service in August 2002. Described as one of the longest-serving Jamaican consuls general, Mr. Atkins joined the Foreign Service in 1989, when he came to the Miami Consulate as deputy to former Consul General, Marie Wray, OD, now deceased. Because of his seniority in the service, Mr. Atkins also served as Vice Dean to the Florida Consular Corp, the third largest in the nation. Mrs. Beverly Ford, who served as Jamaica’s Honorary Consul to Texas under his directorship, praised him for serving his country with loyalty and commitment, and that he will be surely missed by those with whom he served. Consul General, R. Oliver Mair, currently in office, paid tribute to Mr. Atkins for his kind and encouraging words of advice during a recent visit with him. CG Mair praised him for his years of service and commitment to Jamaica. Mr. Atkins was appointed as Consul General in 1994, when he succeeded then Consul General, Ambassador Madge Barrett. During his tenure, Mr. Atkins focused primarily on the immigration and deportation area of his consular duties. Along with other Caribbean diplomats of the Florida Consular Corp, he was instrumental in giving recognition to the Consular Notification System which obligates municipal police offices in South Florida to immediately report to the respective Consulates the arrest and detention of nationals of those respective countries. This became increasingly topical since the passing of the US Immigration Bill 1994, in which immigrants with resident status would be deported, if found guilty following arrests on varying counts of misdemeanor charges. Vance Carter, OD, CD, Vice Consul at the Consulate, who worked closely with Mr. Atkins in Immigration matters spoke of his strength of character and his dedication in serving the interests of Jamaican nationals abroad. A former Senator and Trade Union leader, Mr. Atkins began his career in industrial relations serving as Assistant Island Supervisor with Jamaica’s National Workers Union (NWU) (1974-89). During his years at the NWU, he worked under the tutelage of former Prime Minister, Most Hon. Michael Manley. He also served as Senator in the Jamaican Government where he was instrumental in formulating proposal for the Maternity Leave with Pay Law (1978) where women are now entitled to maternity leave with pay.Mrs. Joan Seaga Gonzalez, then President of the Jamaica United Relief Association (JURA) a community-based association spoke of his generous and thoughtful approach to business, “never turning anyone away”. In his relationship with the communities particularly those in South Florida, Mr. Atkins worked closely with the churches, especially those denominations with large Jamaican populations. He also maintained closed relations with the South Florida based community associations, their main objective being the interest of nation-building in Jamaica in the areas of health, education, culture, and trade and investment. Sydney Roberts, Executive Director of the Jamaica Awareness, reminisced about his many talks with Mr. Atkins, from whom he learnt a lot about negotiations. This, he said, helped to hone his career as a cultural ambassador for Jamaica. As a director of the Beacon Council, a private sector agency of the Miami-Dade business community, the then Consul General used this forum as an exchange for trade and commerce, and investment opportunities, benefitting both the local and foreign markets. Jamaica’s former Consul General to Miami, John P. Atkins passed peacefully last Sunday (June 14) at his home in Miami, after a long period of illness. He was 78 years of age. Consul General, R.
